When it comes to the most influential and inspirational travel destinations, you might want to take a trip to the movies. There are so many wonderfully iconic movie destinations out there, that are truly inspirational places to visit. If you’ve ever seen a movie and thought, ‘I’d love to go there,’ then this is the right list for you.
In true geeky fashion, here are five of the most jaw-dropping movie-based destinations you should pencil in for your next adventure.
1. Petra, Jordan – Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is one of the greatest adventure films ever made. So it stands to reason that it should also be home to one of the great adventure locations, the city of Petra, in Jordan. Petra is famed as the home of the Treasury, a fantastically ornate temple carved into the sandstone rock face. Unlike in the movie, you can’t actually enter the temple, and the structure is only a facade in the rock face. However, it’s still cool, iconic, and interesting, and you should make the most of it!
2. New Zealand – The Lord of the Rings
Throughout New Zealand, there are so many epic locations that were used in the filming of Peter Jackson’s epic fantasy trilogy. The best place to start would be to head to the town of Matamata, two hours outside of Auckland, as it’s the place you can discover the Shire and Hobbiton in all its miniature glory. Also thoroughly recommended are trips to see Mount Sunday, and Waitomo Caves, both of which played a role in the films.
3. Rwanda – Gorillas in the Mist
You might remember the 1988 flick Gorillas in the Mist, with Sigourney Weaver. Well, this is the movie that showed us just how amazing and beautiful Rwanda can actually be. This is definitely the place to go if you want an introduction to Africa, and there are some great mountain gorilla safaris all across Rwanda. This is an excellent chance to get up close and personal with these magnificent animals, in much the same way that Sigourney’s character does in the movies.
4. Sicily – The Godfather
Anyone who has ever seen The Godfather (if you haven’t, where have you been?) will know how delightful and iconic Sicily is. For the genuine, authentic Godfather experience, it’s the small town of Savoca you’re going to want to visit. This quiet coastal town is the very embodiment of little Italy, and the perfect place to enjoy other surrounding locations from the movie, such as Piazza Fossia, and Bar Vitelli. There are countless Godfather Tours here, where you can enjoy the restaurants and glorious locations in Sicily. Now, that’s surely an offer you can’t refuse?
5. London – Harry Potter
There’s no doubting The Boy Who Lived is a British icon these days, and there’s no better place to get your Harry Potter fix than in London. Stop by the iconic King’s Cross Station and grab a selfie at Platform 9 ¾. Hop aboard the Hogwarts Express (actually just a bus) and head to The Harry Potter Studio Tour where you can see all of the sets and props from the movies. You can also experience all things Potter with a visit to Hogsmeade at Universal Studios in Florida. However, it’s clear that London is the home of Harry, and this is why it makes the list.
Some of the most inspirational destinations for an adventure are where some of the best movies were made. The next time you’re stuck on where to visit, take a leaf from your favorite film and try one of these destinations.
